First Blog

Well, here it is the first blog....... don't really have anything to say right now, but I got sick of seeing it blank, so..... I'm thinking......

Well, so far this has not been a great year for me. Starting from the day after SoulFest last year, when our house was struck by lightning, then between losing my brother, a chimney fire and being sick twice, it's been rough, to say the least. Then, one of my guinea pigs died a few days ago, and numerous little things in between have contributed to making this year unpleasant..... but anyway, that's too depressing. Let's move on now...

So, now that I only have 1 guinea pig, I decided to give him a change of scenery. His cage is up on a table instead of on the floor, so he's in a high rise now, and he doesn't quite know what to think of the new view. His name is Skillet (don't laugh, it's not a stupid name for a Guinea Pig, it suits him). He's also kinda sad, since he misses his buddy Woodstock, but hopefully he'll be back to his old spazzy self soon.

So, I guess that's all that's happening right now, I just helped my mother go through her clothes, so I could sell the ones that she didn't want in my yard sale to make some money for SoulFest, since I have no job right now.

So, I guess that's it, the first blog. Not too exciting, but o-well, at least it's not blank anymore, that was bugging me, so now I'm happy.

In my last post, when I said "That's a blog for another time", this is that one. Another time has arrived. Over the the past couple of years, I've been hearing the same commentary on the labor market from everybody & their brother. I've even said it myself a few times. "Nobody wants to work". That's an inaccurate statement. It's no secret that the service industry is suffering the most. Yeah, we've heard about fields like plumbing, where not enough people are pursuing careers to replace the professionals that are retiring. I think we could all agree, though, that you are most aware of the "labor shortage" when you are waiting in line. Whether that's at the grocery store, the coffee shop, the bank, or the fast food drive-thru. Nobody wants to work... for customers. Suddenly Essential

I haven't written for a very long time... years, actually, but I want to do it more, so here we go.   I don't want to talk about the policies surrounding the virus, there's plenty of people doing that. I just want to share a bit about what it has been like to work at a grocery store during this time. In 2010, when I was 20 years old, I was hired as a cashier at Hannaford. During my first winter working there, I drove to work in a few snowstorms. One was nasty enough that business was pretty slow when I got there. I had been there maybe an hour or so, when a manager asked me if I would like to go home. Obviously, I said "no", after going through the trouble of getting to work in the storm, it seemed foolish to only work for an hour.
